For Luke and Lucy :)

Something amazing happened this week which has left my "Autie Family" on Facebook grinning like proverbial Cheshire cats... Since our very good and totally wonderful friend posted her news up on a status, we have all been walking around looking as if we have coathangers wedged in our mouths as we cannot stop smiling. There have been tears of joy, whoops of happiness and emotions running high in general. What could possibly have triggered this tidal wave of emotion....

Ok-wasn't sure whether to post this news.....
Yesterday, Thursday October 1st 09, Luke spoke 1st words, hes almost 10 and lost his speech at 15 months!!!! Never believed in miracles, but do now, its all down to such dedication of Lukes tutors...we had gi...ven up on speech, it used to be top of our wish list, but major toileting issues & understanding took over. Things just seem to have clicked with him now, we are so happy for Luke & very very proud.....and today more new words!!!!! His 1st word yesterday was an unprompted "BYE", in a very deep voice, amazing!!!!!

These words and the updates we have been receiving on his progress have given others renewed hope. He is the inspiration now for countless parents who despaired of ever hearing their loved one speak. Luke is responsible for many parents finding the strength and energy to carry on. I have never met him in person, but know his mother Lucy both online and in person. I met her through a special needs forum and she was my first facebook autie contact. Its not surprising to me that she has such an amazing son as she herself is an amazing woman with such strength and commitment to not only Luke, but to all her family. She has fundraised tirelessly for the Assistance Dog program, thrown herself off buildings (well absailed down them but to me its the same thing hehe), is always volunteering to sell pins, or lego blocks, or pack bags or whatever is needed to raise funds for services for our wonderful children. She has always been there to offer me words of support when I'm feeling low, or to celebrate with me when Munchkin achieves something. Thank you Lucy.... This astonishing and wonderful achievement of Lukes could not have happened to a more deserving person and I know that you will savour every word...

Even if we have given up hope at times, our children haven't :)

I have been priviledged to also know Lucy she was one of my very first contacts also when our little boy Robbie was diagnosed with Autism its mothers like you Lucy that provide such hope and belief for the future as all to often parents are given a diagnosis of no hope no future. I also have been so lucky to also have the love and deadication of one of the same tutors my only wish would be to never let go of such deadicated tutors but we soon will and we are all so touched and so hopeful for the future Luke and Lucy I would just like to wish you so much and from my heart you have touched mine and given me great support xxx Shirl

Excellent blog Petunia, the first thing I've thought of yesterday and this morning was Luke. The outpouring of happiness and the hope it has given to us all is absolutely amazing.

This has been the most amazing news for all of us on our fb family, the feeling of Joy that Luke and Lucy have given us is truly inspirational, they have given people hope and the strength to keep going in their own fight. It has also happened to the most wonderful person, Lucy is truly a great mum and a inspiration to all of us that have the pleasure to know her.

Fantastic story, and I was amazed when I heard it. Lucy is a fantastic mum, and so deseres it. I found myself wondering a few times what he was saying now.
When I was telling my dh about it I had a lump in my throat...I have never even met luke, but I felt really thrilled for him.
Well done Lucy and Luke.

When I heard Lucy and Lukes wonderful news i didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so I ended up doing a bit of both (i even considered doing a bit of a Tom cruise, but don't think the sofa could take it).
With all my heart I am filled with joy for their achievement.
Lovely post tracy xxx

A shining moment that Im privilaged to have heard about (and to know the lovely Lucy and Pat makes it even more special). The strength of our friendships stands out a mile not only in our dark times - but in the fact that we all rejoice in the miracles and fantasticness (its a word!!) of our unique and beautiful children. Bursting with pride for ya Luce, like as if Luke was my own xxxx

Gee girls, im overwhelmed with all the lovely comments!!!! Luke is doing so well, and a cheeky grin plays on his face when he speaks,as if he is fully aware of the huge step he has taken!
In school (the wonderful ABACAS Drogheda), he is pointing to objects & sayin the word, and sayin goodbye un- prompted. The best laugh is , when my girls are in the play room and maybe Luke wants peace, he waves at them & says "bye bye" , just to get rid of them!!!!!
It has been a most momentous week for all of us, we are so proud of Luke! and we are preparing for the imminent arrival of Joeys assistance dog too!!! Thanks to all my girlies!!!!

Good things come to those who wait! And by God, you've waited, girl! We are so proud of you and Luke, and I'm finding myself just grinning from ear to ear when I think of you! You really don't have any clue how much people admire you and all you do, no-one deserves this more than you and Luke!!
